Your Teacher
Mrs. Klusken
Hello! My name is Ms. Klusken and this is my fifteenth year teaching in CPS. I am a native of Chicago and went to CPS schools myself, Hawthorne for K-6 and Whitney Young 7-12. I attended the University of Illinois where I received my undergraduate degree in advertising. Soon after moving back to Chicago I decided to go back to school, DePaul this time, to pursue my masters in elementary education. I received my degree and have been teaching ever since! In my spare time I love to read, cook, travel, spend time with my family, and take my dog, Hudson, on walks in our neighborhood. My husband and I have two children, Emerson, who is 9 years old, and Adalynn, who is 6 years old. I am excited to be teaching 5th grade this year and working with many of my same students from last year. I have a few novels picked out that I can't wait to start reading with you!

This year 5th grade will follow a behavior guideline, revolving around the school’s motto: SOAR. The SOAR matrix can be found in the student agenda. This document covers behavior expectations in the classroom, hallway, bathroom, bus line, etc. Teachers will discuss these guidelines during the first week of school and any support from home would be strongly encouraged. Within each homeroom, students and teachers will decide the appropriate rewards and consequences, dependent on the individual child. Explicit details will be shared at Open House and may include lunch detention.
Please read through the Chicago Public School’s Student Code of Conduct (SCC) as there have been some changes; i.e. bullying policy. Please sign and return the “Acknowledgement of Receipt” pg. from the SCC.
Thank you for your continued support and look forward to having a wonderful school year!
Sincerely,
The 5th Grade Team

Homework policy
Please note that homework that is assigned needs to be completed by the date it is due. We go over the assignments in class and they are used as a class discussion to explain confusing topics and elaborate where needed so students understand what we are learning. If homework is not done a student is not prepared to fully participate in discussions or ask for clarification. When it comes to projects and published writing, students can turn work in late, but it must be turned in within two weeks of the due date, or within one week before grades are due for that progress report.

Donors Choose in our Classroom
We are very lucky to have received supplies in the past from Donors Choose grants that I have written, which include two of the novels we will read this year. There are a few other projects in the works that I hope to get funded this year to help in elevating our learning.
If you are unaware of DonorsChoose and would like to help out with supplies needed by our classroom, please check on the Donors Choose website for opportunities.
